.... what they used to be.

So, my wife complains that her scooter's front end shudders at speed. She talks to the guys at South Valley Yamaha Kawasaki where they sell Kymcos and he says to bring in the front wheel and they will balance it. So far so good.

I dutifully remove the front wheel (very easy scooter to work on btw) and take it to the shop. Later I call them to see how it's going and the guy says that the wheel won't fit on their dynamic balancer. I say, "Then do a static balance on it." No one there has any idea what I am talking about. LOL! Then he says that we could try balance plus but that the tire has a tube and it's not recommended.

So I go pick up the wheel and it says "tubeless" right on the tire and the valve stem is a tubeless type. So I guess the mechanics are illiterate as well as poorly trained. LOLOLOL!

I stop at O'Reilly's Auto Parts and get a package of stickon weights. I put the axle through the wheel and set it where the tire can rotate freely and keep sticking weights on the high end until the wheel balances. Now it doesn't shudder any more and since the scooter will barely hit 70 the balance is quite sufficient.

I can't believe that modern mechanics never heard of static balancing.

Well, maybe I do believe it. Obviously they can't read the word "tubeless".

I guess I'm lucky; my wife never complains about her... Oh! you said "Scooter"!

Never mind!

It pays to be self sufficient. Today's hipsters are in trouble.

Did I tell you about my visit to Hipster Central, also dba as Seattle Triumph? more humungo beards than a Mathew Brady Confederate Generals portrait, pants so tight they must tape their junk back to wear them and as many variations of Converse All Stars as a Zappo's website.

They have a nice selection of bikes and the mechanic at least appeared to know a Whitworth Spanner from a 13mm box end, I haven't needed anything done by them though so I can't say.

Yes the beards. Dodger announcer Vin Scully this year said during a game that ball players used to look like Clark Gable and now they all look like Gabby Hayes.
